You can declare the teaching credential concentration in your first year of undergraduate studies and complete all required coursework for your major in three years. During your senior year, you will take online classes with graduate students and complete the required 600 hours of teaching students in local public schools. Students who complete the Teaching Credential concentration will also meet the requirements for the Education Minor. Dominican will support you every step of the way and help you launch your career as an educator.

Coursework Timeline
Students complete:
- All major requirements.
- All core requirements.
- Any Subject Matter Competency Requirements as specified by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).
Although students will not take any education courses during their first three years, they may choose Service-Learning courses to gain experience in public school settings.
During the fall semester, students:
- Complete 140 hours of fieldwork in a public school with one formal observation by a University Supervisor. (About 10 hours/week.)
During the spring semester, students:
- Complete full time student teaching fieldwork, five days a week (460 hours).
- Successfully teach 10 lessons observed and evaluated by a University Supervisor.
All courses are online in the afternoons/evenings with graduate students. The full course load of Education classes must be completed with at least a “B” in every course.
- Student-athletes must first meet with the Chair of the Education Department to assess eligibility due to required time commitments. (The traditional 4+1 may be a better fit for some athletes.)
- Students must complete a CPR certification and pass Cycle I and Cycle II of the Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA).
- While we strongly encourage students to declare the teaching credential concentration in their first year, you may be able to take courses over the summer to finish the requirements before their undergraduate senior year. Please be sure to check with your academic advisor.
